Intent
At St Joseph’s, we have designed a broad and balanced curriculum. We intend our children to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. Links to other subjects such as maths, science, computing and art are made.
Our Design and Technology curriculum aims to ensure that children:
- are resilient when they try and test new ideas and products.
- become confident to develop their knowledge and understanding of skills in order to make high quality prototypes and products for a range of different users.
- have self belief believing they can do it!
Implementation
At St Joseph’s, Design and Technology topics are taught every term. In order to aid children design, make and evaluate their ideas we have designed a broad and balanced curriculum which builds upon prior knowledge and develops new concepts.
Within each Design and Technology topic, children are given the opportunity to research and develop their ideas to ensure products are fit for purpose. Children are encouraged to present their findings and develop ideas using a range of different techniques such as annotated sketches, exploded diagrams and prototypes. As children develop their ideas, they are then able to make a product using a range of different tools and equipment. Children are able to select from and use a wider range of materials and components, including construction materials, textiles and ingredients. As children complete their products, they are then given the opportunity to talk and discuss successful design elements and areas for improvement. Children will draw upon their technical knowledge and vocabulary that has been taught throughout the unit.
