Living Out Catholic Social Teaching

At our school, Catholic Social Teaching (CST) is at the heart of everything we do. Rooted in the teachings of Jesus Christ and the mission of the Catholic Church, it provides a framework for understanding how we can build a fairer, more just and compassionate world.

Catholic Social Teaching encourages us to recognise the dignity of every person and to use our gifts and talents to serve others. Through our curriculum, prayer life, charitable work and daily interactions, pupils are encouraged to put these values into action and become responsible global citizens.

Human Dignity

We believe that every person is created in the image and likeness of God and is therefore deserving of love, respect and care.

We promote human dignity by:

  • Valuing every member of our school community
  • Treating others with kindness and respect
  • Celebrating diversity and individuality
  • Challenging discrimination and unkind behaviour
  • Ensuring every child feels safe, valued and included

The Common Good

The common good reminds us that we are all responsible for one another and that our actions should benefit the wider community.

Pupils learn to:

  • Work together cooperatively
  • Support others in times of need
  • Contribute positively to school life
  • Care for their local community
  • Recognise how their actions affect others

Participation

Everyone has a role to play in building a strong and caring community.

We encourage pupils to participate through:

  • School Council
  • Leadership opportunities
  • Collective worship
  • Charitable activities
  • Sharing their ideas and opinions

Children learn that their voice matters and that they can make a difference.

Preferential Option for the Poor

Jesus showed special concern for those most in need, and we are called to do the same.

This is promoted through:

  • Fundraising for local and national charities
  • Supporting CAFOD and other Catholic charities
  • Learning about poverty and inequality
  • Acts of service and generosity
  • Encouraging empathy and compassion for others

Solidarity

Solidarity teaches us that we are one human family, regardless of differences in background, culture or beliefs.

Pupils develop solidarity by:

  • Learning about global issues
  • Supporting charitable causes
  • Celebrating diversity
  • Understanding the challenges faced by others
  • Recognising our shared responsibility for one another

Stewardship

God has entrusted us with the care of His creation, and we all have a responsibility to protect the world around us.

Examples of stewardship in school include:

  • Eco Warrior initiatives
  • Learning about sustainability
  • Appreciating and respecting God’s creation

Dignity of Work

We recognise that work has value and that everyone should have the opportunity to contribute to society with dignity.

  • Respecting the work of others
  • Different careers and vocations
  • Working collaboratively
  • Taking pride in their achievements

Peace

As followers of Christ, we are called to be peacemakers in our homes, schools and communities.

We promote peace through:

  • Demonstrating forgiveness
  • Encouraging kindness and understanding

Catholic Social Teaching in Action

Catholic Social Teaching is not simply something we learn about; it is something we live every day. Whether through charitable fundraising, supporting one another, caring for our environment or leading by example, our pupils are encouraged to put faith into action.

Through Catholic Social Teaching, we strive to nurture children who are compassionate, responsible and committed to making a positive difference in the world God created.
