Curriculum Enrichment at St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School

At St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, we believe that learning extends well beyond the classroom. Our rich programme of curriculum enrichment enhances academic learning, supports personal development and nurtures the whole child. Through these experiences, pupils develop confidence, self belief and responsibility, while learning to show respect, compassion and honesty towards others.

Our enrichment offer supports the promotion of British Values, including democracy, mutual respect, tolerance and individual liberty, and enables pupils to live out the Trust virtues of respect, resilience, justice, honesty and responsibility in meaningful, real life contexts.

Through leadership opportunities, enrichment activities, educational visits and special themed events, pupils are encouraged to develop new skills, discover interests and grow into confident, reflective and responsible citizens.

Pupil Leadership Opportunities

We place great importance on pupil voice and leadership, recognising these as key ways to promote democracy, responsibility and confidence. Pupils are encouraged to take on roles of service and leadership within the school, developing self belief, honesty and respect for others.

Pupils may apply for or be elected to the following leadership roles:

  • School Council – representing pupil voice and contributing to school improvement (democracy, respect)
  • Sports Leaders – promoting physical activity and teamwork (resilience, confidence)
  • Wellbeing Leaders – supporting positive mental health (compassion, responsibility)
  • Reading Ambassadors – encouraging a love of reading (confidence, self belief)
  • Mini Vinnies – living out Catholic Social Teaching through service (justice, compassion)
  • Eco Warriors – promoting care for our common home (responsibility, respect)
  • Fairtrade Representatives – raising awareness of fairness and global justice (justice, honesty)

These roles help pupils to develop leadership skills, resilience and a strong sense of responsibility, while actively contributing to the life of the school community.

Extra Curricular Activities

We offer a varied programme of lunchtime and after school clubs, which changes across the year to reflect pupils’ interests and seasonal opportunities. These activities support individual liberty, allowing pupils to explore interests and talents beyond the classroom.

Activities may include:

  • Archery
  • Dance
  • Choir
  • Cookery

Through participation, pupils:

  • Build confidence and self belief
  • Develop resilience and perseverance
  • Learn to work collaboratively, showing respect and honesty
  • Strengthen friendships and teamwork

We aim to ensure all enrichment opportunities are inclusive and accessible, promoting equality, mutual respect and enjoyment for all.

Educational Visits and Visitors

We believe that first hand experiences play a vital role in bringing learning to life and helping pupils understand their place within society. Educational visits and visitors support pupils in developing curiosity, respect for others and an understanding of the wider world.

Educational Visits may include:

  • National Railway Museum
  • Centre for Life
  • Hancock Museum
  • Local farm
  • Local library
  • Local nature reserve

All pupils, from Nursery to Year 6, experience live theatre through an annual visit to watch a Christmas pantomime, promoting cultural awareness and shared experiences.

All pupils in Year 6 take part in a visit to London, including the Houses of Parliament, which is provided free of charge. This visit strengthens pupils’ understanding of democracy, the rule of law and individual liberty.

Visitors to School

We regularly welcome visitors such as:

  • Kielder Observatory
  • Local authors
  • Local artists
  • Emergency services (police, fire and ambulance)

These experiences help pupils understand real life roles within society and promote responsibility, respect and community cohesion.

Residential Visits

Residential visits provide powerful opportunities for pupils to develop resilience, independence and teamwork.

Residential experiences may include:

  • Derwent Hill Outdoor Centre
  • Emmaus Youth Village

These visits enable pupils to:

  • Challenge themselves physically and personally
  • Build confidence and self belief
  • Strengthen friendships through teamwork and mutual respect
  • Grow socially, spiritually and emotionally in a supportive environment

Celebrating Special Days and Weeks

Throughout the year, we celebrate a range of national, global and faith based events that help pupils develop cultural awareness, compassion and a strong sense of justice.

These include:

  • Parliament Week (democracy)
  • Refugee Week (compassion, tolerance)
  • Anti Bullying Week (respect, honesty)
  • Internet Safety Day (responsibility, rule of law)
  • Year of Reading
  • Year of Hope

These events promote reflection, discussion and active participation, helping pupils to understand their role as respectful, responsible and compassionate citizens.

First Aid Training

As part of our commitment to pupils’ wellbeing and personal development, all children in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 take part in annual, age appropriate first aid training.

Pupils learn how to seek help, manage minor injuries and understand basic emergency procedures. This develops confidence, resilience and responsibility, empowering pupils to care for themselves and others.
