Pupils in Year 5 and 6 at St Joseph's Catholic Primary School in Newton Aycliffe enjoyed an inspiring visit to the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle as part of their art and design learning.

During the visit, the children explored the sculptures of renowned artist Henry Moore, studying the different materials used and examining how the human figure can be represented through sculpture. They also discussed the position and direction of figures, confidently using artistic vocabulary such as proportion and abstract to describe what they observed.

Back in the classroom, the pupils brought their learning to life through a series of creative activities. Working in groups, they transformed themselves into human sculptures, creating shapes inspired by objects including footballs, bridges and chairs. The children then worked in pairs to sketch one another in a range of poses, developing their understanding of form and structure.

Using these drawings as inspiration, Year 5 and 6 went on to create their own clay figures. Applying a variety of sculpting techniques, they carefully shaped and refined their work, demonstrating both creativity and artistic skill throughout the process.

The finished sculptures showcased the pupils' imagination, attention to detail and growing confidence as young artists. Staff were incredibly impressed by the quality of the work produced and the enthusiasm shown by the children during the project.

Well done to Year 5 and 6 for their creativity, teamwork and outstanding artwork.
