International Mother Language Day

Last Friday, children across St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School have been taking part in International Mother Language Day, a special global celebration that takes place every year on 21st February. The day encourages people all around the world to appreciate the many languages spoken in our communities and to recognise how important it is to protect and celebrate them.

At St Joseph’s, Newton Aycliffe, we are incredibly proud of the rich mix of cultures, families and languages that make up our school community. To mark the occasion, every child in school was invited to share one line in their own mother language - the language they speak at home or that reflects their family’s heritage.

The atmosphere in school has been joyful, respectful and wonderfully vibrant. Children spoke lines in languages including English, Dari Persian, Arabic (Iraq), Persian/Farsi, Yoruba, Polish, Kurdish, Konkani, Shona and Urdu. FilipinoSome children even taught their classmates how to pronounce simple words and phrases, helping everyone understand and appreciate the beauty of each language.

International Mother Language Day is promoted by the United Nations as a way of celebrating multiculturalism and encouraging people everywhere to value linguistic diversity. It also reminds us how important it is for children to maintain their home languages, as this supports their identity, confidence and learning.

Our pupils have shown such pride in their heritage, and it has been a privilege to see them listen to one another with such curiosity and respect. The day has helped us all understand that while we may speak different languages, we share the same values of kindness, unity and community.

A huge well done to all our children for their enthusiasm and bravery in sharing their languages with us. And thank you to all our families for supporting this wonderful celebration of who we are.

St Joseph’s is—and always will be—a community where every language is welcome.
