Pupils at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Newton Aycliffe were treated to an unforgettable experience as they welcomed Team GB gymnast and Gladiators champion Joe Fishburn for a truly inspiring school visit.
Excitement filled the air from the very start as Joe kicked things off with the iconic call:
“Contenders ready… Gladiators ready… 3, 2, 1!”
A Powerful Message of Resilience and Determination
During his visit, Joe spoke passionately about how adversity became his superpower, encouraging pupils to view challenges as opportunities for growth. He shared personal stories from his life, reflecting on his upbringing and highlighting the important role his grandmother played in shaping his mindset.
His message resonated strongly with pupils, reminding them to be grateful for those who support them and to stay focused on their own ambitions.
Joe encouraged everyone to keep going when life gets tough, follow their talents, and believe in their ability to succeed.

Learning from Setbacks
One of the most powerful parts of Joe’s talk was his honesty about the setbacks he has faced throughout his career. He spoke openly about falling during a Team GB performance and how he used that experience to come back stronger.
By sharing these real-life challenges, Joe reinforced the importance of resilience, perseverance, and self-belief, showing pupils that success often comes from learning through difficult moments.
Behind the Scenes of Gladiators
Pupils were also fascinated to hear about Joe’s experiences competing on Gladiators, including taking on well-known competitors such as Steel and Giant. He shared insights into:
- The physical demands of competition
- Managing injuries while performing
- The intensity of filming, with around an hour of filming needed for one episode
Joe’s determination paid off in spectacular fashion when he started the eliminator with a 6-second lead and went on to win, a moment that captured the imagination of everyone in attendance.
Gladiator-Style Training Workshops
The excitement didn’t stop at the talk. Pupils also took part in Gladiator-style training workshops, where they had the opportunity to put Joe’s advice into action.
These sessions focused on:
- Building stamina and fitness
- Developing teamwork skills
- Boosting confidence and resilience
The workshops were energetic, engaging, and enjoyed by all, leaving pupils feeling motivated and inspired.
