St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Newton Aycliffe enjoyed a fantastic World Book Day celebration yesterday, filled with creativity, colourful costumes, and a shared love of reading. Our two‑year‑olds and nursery children had an especially wonderful day embracing the joy of stories in fun and imaginative ways.
Throughout the day, children arrived dressed as their favourite book characters—from timeless classics to modern favourites. The effort, imagination and creativity that went into the costumes were truly impressive, bringing beloved stories to life across our EYFS classrooms.
One of the highlights of the day was our challenge to find an unusual place to read a book. Children enthusiastically explored cosy corners, imaginative spaces and unexpected spots around the setting, all while enjoying their favourite stories. These moments helped reinforce the message that books can be enjoyed anywhere and everywhere.

World Book Day is an important part of our school’s reading culture. It encourages children to:
- Develop a lifelong love of books
- Explore new stories and characters
- Use their imagination in creative and meaningful ways
- Experience the joy of dressing up and celebrating together
Events like this strengthen our school community and support early reading skills, helping children see books as exciting gateways to adventure, comfort and discovery.
A huge thank you to all families for the time and care put into the wonderful costumes—your enthusiasm helps make World Book Day such a special event for the children.
Here’s to more stories, more imagination, and many more reading adventures ahead.
Happy World Book Day from St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School!
